"Importance and relevance of the Historical Jesus to the Divinity of Christ"

Is it really important for us to look at the historical part of who Jesus is when we come to know Him.

i personally think that looking at the historical Jesus might not help us to understand who Jesus really is and especially the work that He did. It is basically Jesus was not made by or due to his history but it is divine anointing from Heavenly father. besides this, the historical Jesus might not portrait the real Jesus Christ, it is because historians tend to have tendency of record selective based on their interest.

As a christian, i would suggest that we stick back to the historical that recorded in the bible for safe and secondly, the information that is not recorded in the bible, i would suggest that it is not so important for us to know.....what do you think?

  1. Hi Cheryl,

For many people, history is so important that they seek to unearth whatever they can to find the evidence proving what they are to believe. Christians are also people who want to see with their own eyes of what they believe, don't you think so?

Thus, Christians are not exempted to avoid the history which can be served as somehow a proof to our faith. As for Historical Jesus, how do you say that historical Jesus might not help us to who He really is and what He did? Does they not find any evidences for who Jesus humanly was? If no, why?

  2. Hi Cheryl,

I do understand why you said that it is easier to 'stick back' to the bible:)but nevertheless it is important that we need to be aware of how people view historically about Jesus even our own members as so that we may understand to what extent people may place historical views about Jesus above authority of scripture that we may draw them back:)Amen!?

PS:Hahaa..Sophin, don't shoot people so fast la. Give some grace;) heheh..

  3. Hi, Sophin

Thank you for you comment. Indeed, i really agree with you that history is important for everyone but i also think that history is not the reason that made us to believe in Him. As respond to your point, "sometimes we do not really need to see with own eyes in order to believe". (Hebrew 11:1)

  4. Dear Cheryl Ngai,
At the past the historical Jesus findings do not benefit Christians much because of their scepticism in the reliability of the Bible especially the Gospels. But history is important, because a mere faith based upon the faith of the apostles and personal encounter could be quite subjective and vague. Our knowledge of Jesus’ deity should be started by faith in what the Bible claims, and also grounded in historically provable facts about Jesus’ earthly life. A good search of historical Jesus should aim at obtaining this purpose.
I agreed with you that historical search should based on the canonical Bible. But due to the biblical writers had selectively written down the life and ministry of Jesus, as you have mentioned, I believe comparisons within the books of NT and investigations into extra-biblical sources will be able to fill in some of the gaps.
Just my 2-cents opinion. Historical Jesus is a very complicate subject. Thanks!

  5. Hi Cheryl Ngai,

In this modern day and age, people are experiencing what I would term as "information-hunger". Everything needs to have a reason and a basis of why it happens or how it happens, else it just remains as an imagery or a fable. Now, we know Christianity revolves around Christ Himself. Remove Christ, there is not Christianity. Alot of our belief about Christ comes from the Bible and as you have mentioned, the historical Jesus can only prove that much of who Jesus was and His work on the cross. But in today's modern day and era, when people are "information-thirsty", wouldn't you say that it would be good to find out if what we believe in, what the bible say really happened in history? But if so, then, the historical Jesus claims otherwise when dealing with the divinity of Christ. Or should we just blindly follow and hold on to the belief that what the Bible say is true eventhough research has proven otherwise?

  6. In my point of view, i think historical Jesus is important as it tells us that Jesus Crist really live. I agree that we must refer back to what the bible says about Jesus, but for non-believer, Bible is just a religeous book, and they might not believe what has written in the bible. Historical Jesus is an evidence to His existence...

  7. We know from Bible that God always reveal Himself through the history. Thus, i believe that He is still doing that at our present world.

Through the historical search of Jesus Christ, we are at least confident to convince people that Jesus is not a myth that the Christians made up. Though, many may have his/her scepticism while researching the historical Jesus, i believe that the truth about Jesus will prevail.

While people are trying to discredit the divinity of Jesus through history, Christians need to use the same method to prove His divinity.

Therefore, i conclude my opinion by saying that it is important for us to know the historical findings about Jesus yet we must also need to balance it with the Biblical teachings about Him.

We need true historical facts to know Jesus and faith through the Bible to believe in Him.

  8. Hi Cheryl,

The Bible we have to understand is not written as a book in history but as a message for the people to turn to God. Through the synoptic gospels, we can see the minute inconsistency in the parallels. If the Bible is read historically then it would appear to have many errs in it.

But rather we have to learn to see the message rather than the history.

    What do you think? :)

  9. hi, Bryan

A reply to your question from my personal viewpoint. i believed that bible (original one) is inerrancy therefore we are not blindly follow. we follow becuase we believed that it is the word of God. Besides, if we able to find out the evidence to proven what was stated in the bible, i would say that it is good to help and enhance our faith to God.
